The sea plays a central role in climate change, while at the same time the maritime economy in Schleswig-Holstein is undergoing a transformation process. The maritime companies in Schleswig-Holstein are faced with the great challenge of having to develop new technologies at a faster pace in order to ensure the future viability of the industry.
The Transfer Center for Maritime Technologies SH, together with its eight project partners, is organizing the first national innovation hackathon for the development of concrete solutions to the challenges of coastal and marine protection. The special feature: the tasks are set by maritime companies, so that the solution concepts can be the starting point for concrete projects and new innovations.
The innovation hackathon will take place from 13.-17. September during the Digital Week under the patronage of GEOMAR director Prof. Dr. Katja Matthes instead:

Objective: Actively implemented knowledge transfer & development of prototypes
The hackathon is something like a productive specialist conference with the aim that the interdisciplinary teams experience active knowledge transfer, basic research is linked with innovative ideas and conceptual projects or product prototypes are developed from the ideas. Concrete implementation projects can and should then be created.
“Experiential knowledge transfer and cooperation in interdisciplinary teams are essential for the development of new business models and products. In particular, we need more speed in practical implementation. The line of sight must also be directed towards new future maritime topics such as Biomaterials and alternative food sources from the sea. There is great potential here in knowledge transfer from basic research to new maritime business models.” explains Managing Director of TransMarTech, Nele Dageförde.
Maritime companies could submit challenges in four subject areas – prominent sponsors represent the subject areas
In four subject areas, maritime companies were able to submit challenges – so-called challenges – for the Ocean Re-CREATION Hackathon. For example, the Gebrüder Friedrich Werft, Peters Werft, AquaVentus eV and the startup Frisch Gefischt submitted tasks that asked the participants about the topics of bycatch minimization, green shipyards or additive manufacturing in ship repair.
Prominent godparents such as Unleash Future Boats founder Stefanie Engelhard, who was applauded by Economics Minister Dr. Bernd Buchholz, who launched the prototype of the world’s first emission-free autonomous water vehicle, are the sponsors of the subject areas.
During the hackathon, the participants receive technical and methodological support from experienced mentors.
